Sleeping is one of our body's response mechanisms to physical and mental exhaustion, it is the way we regenerate our cells and establish our knowledge.

Sleeping improves our mood and helps regulate our metabolism.

But... what does sleep mean?

If we go to the dictionary, this is the literal meaning of sleep:

To sleep is to be in a state of rest that consists of the inaction or suspension of the senses and of all voluntary movement.

Is sleeping the same as resting?

We are all capable of sleeping when we are sleepy, but rest requires some external factors that are crucial to achieve it. Rest, therefore, is what helps to eliminate fatigue and physical or moral ailments.



EXTERNAL FACTORS TO ACHIEVE A GOOD REST

How to get adequate rest?

The fact of resting correctly will ensure that the person is relaxed, without any kind of exhaustion and with all the active attitudes to develop her routine. Therefore, due to the importance of having a proper rest, medical experts recommend the following guidelines to achieve it:

  • Always keep the same schedule when it comes to going to bed.
  • Do not have heavy dinners.
  • Do not drink drinks that contain caffeine or are stimulants in the hours before going to bed.
  • Exercise regularly. Specifically, it is recommended to carry it out at least three days a week.
  • Have a comfortable bed.

  • It is essential to go to bed and get into it with loose and comfortable clothes.
  • Keep the room well ventilated and at an optimal temperature

Let's focus today on the latter: There are only a few days left before summer officially enters, but the hot nights are already starting to show. Just as we adapt our personal wardrobe, it is essential to adapt our bed for the times ahead.
It is important to know that, according to the Spanish Sleep Society, "sleep occurs when body temperature drops as a result of redistribution of heat from inside the body to the periphery. Body temperature depends largely on measure of the environment, so extreme temperatures alter this mechanism, disturbing sleep".
"In neutral thermal environments, between 18-21ºC, maximum levels of total sleep time, deep sleep and REM sleep are reached.
